My dear old Granddad, who incidentally was 103 last month, comes from a family of butchers going back three generations. Here's a photo of one of their shops in London, taken in the 1890's.
Only those wearing aprons worked in the shop, so who were the rest?
Customers of the Middleton arms we think!

That's a lovely bit of history! I find it sad that people don't visit the butchers anymore. Everything's from the supermarket, from people who don't know or understand where the meat came from. Before I started working at the farmers' market, I used to get all my meat from this traditional butcher's at high holborn. Very friendly, good people they were, and they were always keen to explain to me all about the cuts of meat and drop me a few free bones.

DeleteIt is a real shame, shop local I say!
When I was growing up we had a butchers. It's now a funeral parlour. Where I live mow there was a butchers. It's now a fancy dress shop. Makes me weep
ReplyDeleteThe changing face of the high street, it's very tough for the independent shops.
